Funbio designed the Amapá Fund with support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and CI-Brazil, and in close collaboration with the Amapá State Environmental Department, with a view to channeling resources into maintaining the state’s biodiversity-protection areas. The AF was launched in 2015 with initial funding of US$ 2.5 million from Conservation International’s Global Conservation Fund (GCF) and a million reais in co-financing from Amapá state.

The mechanism raises funds from a variety of sources, including Conduct Adjustment Agreements/Consent Decrees, donations and payments for the provision of environmental services. The aim is to increase the agility of execution and flexibility of resource allocations to protected areas so as to meet the real needs of PAs throughout the nation’s most preserved state.
