Lagoons are key environments for coastal biodiversity and suffer constant pressure from human activities. Formed by erosion and sedimentation causing former bays to close in on themselves, lagoons have clear, brackish water, with lower salinity than the sea.

Coordinated by the Educational Foundation for Science and Development, the project’s goal is to understand and describe the main mechanisms that control the dynamic of lagoon systems along the Eastern Fluminense (Rio State) coast. This will hopefully make it possible to draw a parallel between current fishing activities  and identify the factors that regulate the lagoon ecosystem’s biological productivity.

From a scientific perspective, the initiative also envisions the development of a    theoretical basis from which to analyze the problems involving overfishing and  pinpoint possible means for conserving the region’s natural resources.

Toward this end, the aim is to host a series of forums to train the various agents and environmental managers operating in the local communities in the use of lagoon resource management tools, environmental impact abatement measures and procedures for the recuperation of degraded areas.
