Managing Institution: Centro de Trabalho Indigenista – CTI
Project Summary: This project aims to strengthen the territorial and environmental management plans (PGTA, the acronym in Portuguese) of the Buriti, Cachoeirinha, and Taunay-Ipegue Indigenous lands, inhabited by the Terena people in the municipalities of Dois Irmãos do Buriti, Miranda, and Aquidauana in Mato Grosso do Sul. It will continue and expand upon previous initiatives undertaken through a partnership between CTI and the Terena People’s Council. The project focuses on increasing the autonomy of the communities in managing their territories, supporting their leaders’ efforts for land demarcation and community well-being, and contributing to the conservation and protection of the Cerrado biodiversity.
The specific objectives of the project are: 1) mobilize villages in the Taunay-Ipegue, Cachoeirinha, and Buriti Indigenous Lands to develop their PGTAs; 2) enhance the training of Terena environmental agents, fostering intergenerational and gender-inclusive dialogues within the communities; and 3) strengthen the Terena People’s Council as a grassroots indigenous organization actively managing Terena Indigenous Lands.
The project will last 24 months and aims to achieve the following results: (a) communities actively participating in activities and informed about the PGTA development process. (b) creation of ethnomaps for the Buriti and Taunay-Ipegue Indigenous Lands and updating the ethnomap for Cachoeirinha. (c) validation of socioenvironmental assessments for the three Indigenous Lands and establishment of internal agreements. (d) updating socioenvironmental data for the Indigenous Lands through reconnaissance expeditions. (e) engaging youth in understanding the link between territory management, environmental preservation, and cultural strengthening. (f) promoting traditional Terena agricultural practices. (g) publishing the PGTAs for the three Indigenous Lands.
